Upon opening in 1924, the school served as the new home for South Side High School. When the high school moved to its new location in 1955, this structure then became South Side Junior High School serving students in grades seven through nine. It later became a Middle School, designed for students in grades six through eight. South Side Middle School houses nearly 900 students from around the district.
Elementary Schools Hewitt Elementary School (K-5) 446 Demott Avenue Rockville Centre NY 11570 (516) 255 8913 Riverside Elementary School (K-5) Riverside School, located on the corner of South Park Avenue and Riverside Drive, opened its doors for the first time on September 20th, 1921. This eight room elementary school welcomed one hundred and fifty seven children in Grades 1 through 6th. Kindergarten was opened a few days later. Mrs. J.J. Phillis who had been connected with the Rockville Centre schools for nearly six years became the Principal. The teachers assigned to Riverside were Beulah B. Benton, Kindergarten, Ruth S. Mabbatta, Grade 1, Frances Van Woert, Grade 2, Jean Fraser, Grade 3, Anna May Eagan, Grade 4, Jane Swart, Grade 5, and Fayette G Smith, Grade 6. Watson School proudly opened in the fall of 1953. The school was named in honor of Mr. Floyd B. Watson, who had served Rockville Center as a teacher, principal and superintendent for a total of thirty-eight years. Since that time, the school has become an integral part of the local community, serving two hundred forty-eight students of diverse backgrounds. Covert Elementary School (K-5) Voters in our district approved a $3,735,000 school expansion package in October 1952. At the time Superintendent Watson expressed the hope that the new elementary school which was to be erected on Long Beach Road and Willow Street would be ready for occupancy in February 1952. However, due to complications, ground was not broken until February 1952. In July 1952, the cornerstone was placed by the wife of the late William S. Covert. Its placement marked the beginning of the implementation of the plan of the Superintendent, Floyd B. Watson and the School Board to build a new school with eleven classrooms on the site previously known as Tally-Ho Farm. William S. Covert was the Supervising Principal in the district from 1905-1918 and became the First Superintendent of Schools. Wilson, a former president of the Board of Education.
